For Project ABC (Alphabetisation Basee par Cellulaire), Joshua Haynes created a software system that empowers rural farmers to make better economic decisions through information and literacy by using mobile phones to send SMS messages to check market prices of specific crops at different markets before traveling all the way to the market, saving transportation costs and providing the farmers with better prices for their crops.

He has since started his own Non-Profit, MASAWA, along with Julie Zollmann and three other former Blakeley Fellows. www.masawa.org

Danielle Cooperated with ACCION Investments to analyze their micro-finance portfolio and performance indicators and to recommend client protection policies.

Courtney worked with NGO’s partnering with KIVA, a web based NGO partnering with MFI’s in over 40 countries, interviewing borrowers and evaluated their needs. She also trained local staff about KIVA.

Country: Brazil

Sihatha strategized potential cross-sector partnerships for Mobile Metrix. Conducted an environmental scan of existing agencies, identified areas for organizational growth and contributed to a proposal to a major pharmaceutical company.

Yanina was in charge of the interviewing and selecting of mobile agents, preparing training materials performing training of mobile agents working for Mobile Metrix in professionalism, interviewing and survey techniques using PDA based software.

Masaharu

Country: Bangladesh

Masaharu started a telemedicine service to connect local villagers with clinics or hospitals to urban hospitals, collaborating with bracNet, Grameen and BRAC. Responsibilities included meeting IT managers in local hospitals, developing a strategic plan and designing a demonstration to prove the service is technically feasible. Pilot project is now run by an NGO.

Sarah worked with African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) to empower communities in wildlife areas to engage in alternative livelihoods that not only have minimal environmental impact but allow them to see tangible benefits from conservation.
